The article accompanying the photo in the Times-Picayune Living Section for Sunday, 30 December 2001, identifies Emmett Perilloux as having served in the Coast Guard and states that Charles Perilloux was a recipient of the Purple Heart medal.
For the record, Emmett was a member of the U.S. Maritime Service. USMS members served as gun crews aboard civilian ships carrying war supplies. Emmett later was in the U.S. Army, serving in the occupation force in Japan.
It was Reed who was awarded the Purple Heart medal during the battle for Okinawa. Reed was in the Navy, but assigned to the Marine Corps as a Corpsman.
