Perfects of Pontefract, Yorkshire, UK
I am tracing a branch of the Perfects based in the Yorkshire town of Pontefract in the late 17th Century.
They were a well-known family of gardeners supplying exotic plants to the gardens and estates of the English gentry & nobility. They were also involved in the production of liquorice, for which Potenfract became famous in this period.
The earliest antecedents are :
Noah Perfect d.1723
married : 19/06/1686 Pontefract
Mary Gale
They had three sons :
1. John Perfect 1690-1764 Mayor of Pontefract 1737 & 1754. Married 3 times :
1. Mary Fleming 2. Elizabeth Smallwood & 3. Mary Weightman (widow nee Cawood)
2. Joseph Perfect 1692-1757
married at St.Warburgh Derby 1719
Mary Heap ?-1758
with issue : 1. Joseph Perfect (b.1721) married Mary Forge of Leeds (1720-1780)
lived Adel,nr Leeds then moved to York.
2. Noah Perfect b.1725. 3. Thomas Perfect b.1728 4. John Perfect b.1731 5. Mary Perfect b.1734 6. Ann Perfect 1737-1758
3. Thomas Perfect of Knottingley 1695-1772.
Our branch is descended from Joseph Perfect b.1721 who moved to Fulford,York and had 8 children including another Joseph (1748-1801)who in turn had another Joseph (1773-1846) who was a recognised painter/artist. His son Henry 1808-1890, also an artist, according to family folklore, worked with the York artist William Etty (famous for his large nudes) filling in the expanses of pink flesh that Etty subcontracted to local journeyman artists !
Anyone out there with information, links or connections to this branch of the family please feel free to get in touch.
