It was Pequot Indians vs. New England Settlers. The Pequot Indians were a warlike tribe centered on the Thames River in Southeastern Connecticut. They increased their land under their chief Sassacus to the Connecticut River, they had numerous quarrels with the settlers, and in 1636 they murdered a trader, John Oldham. Governor John Endicott of Massachusetts bay Colony organized a military force to punish the Indians, and on May 26, 1637, the first battle of the Pequot War took place when the New Englanders, under John Mason and John Underhill, attacked the Pequot stronghold near present day New Haven, Conn. The Indian forts were burned and about 500 men, women and children were killed. The survivors were hounded, many killed and any captives were sold as slaves in the West Indies. Sasacus was captured and turned over to the Mohawks who were enemies of the Pequots, and was put to death. Any remaining Pequots were scattered among other New England tribes.
Don't fret for them too much for now they own the largest Casino in the country - Foxwoods in Ledyard,Connecticut and live the life of luxury. They also were sucessful in getting the monument of John Mason moved to some remote location after it was repeatidly vandalized.
