The longer you do genealogy, the more variation you will find in family names. There was no standardized spelling, and the census taker--or county clerk if it was a marriage record or deed--spelled the name as HE heard it.Some of them had hearing loss (no hearing aids back then). At other times our ancestors had speech impediments. And some times the census taker or county clerk thought he knew more than our ancestors because he was educated; i.e. he could read and write. So he would write down the name he thought it should be rather than what they said.A (sic) means that the word or name was written exactly that way even though it may be different from the norm.
Yes, I'm very sure the Presnells of 1850 were the same people as the Pennells of 1860.Look at Thomas' family.Even though the ages are off by two or three years for several of them from one census to the next, they have exactly the same names in exactly the same order, with some of the kids having highly unusual names--like Caltha/Calfy and Pinckney, for example.
By the way, I found another Harrison Presnell/Pennell in 1850 Caldwell county, and he is most likely part of the same clan.
1850 Caldwell co., NC., Little River Dist., pp. 45A through 46A:
House 176, Family 177
Harrison Presnell, 28
Elizabeth, 33
Sarah, 7
Lary/Fary/Fasy/Tasy? (female), 6
William, 5
Aaron, 4
Daniel, 3
Dwelling 177, Family 178 (next door neighbor)
George Sherrell, 30 (Julius H. Pennell married a Sherrill)
Rebecca, 29
Abner, 5
Emma, 4
Dwelling 178, Family 179
David Sherrell, 63
Thenia, 57
Sarah, 18,
Calvin, 15
Thenia, 8
Dwelling 185, Family 186
Danl.[Daniel] Presnell, 52
Tasy/Lary/Tary ?, 53 (wife)
Elizabeth, 23
Elijah, 19
Abraham, 17
Catharine, 14
William, 12
Mary, 10
Daniel Presnell/Pennell is most likely the father of the above Harrison Pennell.
