I talked with several members of the Penley family about one year ago relative to my gggrandmother, Nancy Penley Kennedy. Since that time I have gathered census data from the 1850 and 1880 Wayne County, Kentucky census that supports 1791 as Nancy Penley's birthdate. The 1880 census identifies North Carolina as her place of birth. Since Nancy and husband Samuel's first child was born in 1810, the marriage date is estimated between 1808 and 1810. Samuel may have been born in Wilkes County, North Carolina. One of the problems with researching the Kennedys is the fact that the name is spelled at least 23 different ways and one branch of the family took the spelling as Canada and it stayed that way to the present time. If there are any Penleys out there who can supply additional information about Nancy, I would appreciate it. A Samuel Kennedy also appears in Bertie County, NC, but I cannot state firmly that this is my Samuel. Nancy was 89 years old at the time of the 1880 census and was living with Samuel Jr. in Wayne County, Ky. She had to be one strong woman to live to 89 at least after having 11 children. Any help would be appreciated. Please contact at e-mail.
