Have you had any luck with your John Morgan Penley? I may a something that is worth looking at. In searching my line John H. and wife Elizabeth Penley of Ivey Madison County have a son John M. the right age you can find him in the 1870 census Madison county 1st page it is listed under J.H. Penly, John M. is 8 years old. This John H. is the son of John and Mary Penly he has two sisters one is Claressa Penly that married Levi Gillis in 1850 and the other sister is older and I have not been able to identify her yet she was already married by 1850.I hope this helps.
