Hi Sandra,
First,THANKYOUever so much for writing to ask about your PENLEY connection!If more PENLEY descendants would do this, then we'd be able to help many find their ancestors and they, in turn, would be able to help us bring their line up-to-date.
Melissa is listed as Melissa Winetta in our database and was Melissa W in both the 1870 and 1900 Census records. I have her bd as 4 June 1864 and her dd as 22 Feb 1921. I do not have a marriage date for Melissa and Charles H BURGESS, but it is likely in 1880. Also I have no information about their descendants and am trusting that you will assist by getting as much of that data to me as possible.
Melissa is the d/oEnoch PENLEY, JR and Betsey T BONSEY;
gd of Enoch PENLEY and his first wife, Lucinda MITCHELL;
G gd of Joseph PENLY and his second wife, Thankful MOODY.
I hope that you will understand that research over the past 75 years has been put into our data base, primarily by the late Rev Robert Irving PENLEY 1909-1996 and, since his death, by several distant cousins who are cooperating in a major search for all of our Joseph 1 PENLY's descendants throughout the US and Canada. We can and will be happy to provide you with more data on the earlier generations in Maine and England, but we do need data on current generations to help us more completely fill out our compilation. I will send you some additional information directly.
I hope your success in finding 3 previous generations to your Melissa W PENLEY will encourage others to ask about their PENLEY roots in Maine.
I am looking forward to working with you and other members of your family to be sure that Melissa's descendants and other relatives will be a included in our database.
Janice
