Lona, thanks for the information. It answers a lot of questions, but creates a few. The child, Emma J. born in 1864, I'm wondering about the father. Austin is listed as deserting on Oct. 14, 1864 and records show his unit being very busy in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania. I doubt that he was on leave. Very few leaves were granted except in extreme hardship and medical cases. Interesting about Austin returning to Georgia. I had not heard that. Our family lore says when AF heard his brothers were killed, he left. Never heard more than that.
