How interesting ! My ancestor, Joseph 1 PENLEY, progenitor of the Maine PENLEY's, was from Nailsworth, Glouchestershire, England. He arrived in Freeport, Maine abt 1770. That makes a relationship to your Francis Thorpe PENLEY certainly possible.
Are you on the rootsweb PENLEY list ? They are talking about DNA testing.
Also, LAPHAM is a Cape Cod, MA name (though I don't have any to the best of my knowledge).
