Hi,
I'm not actively doing any research on the Penick/Pate (Paite) line, but I am related.Like you I have seen other William Penick references that seem to be other individuals who lived concurrently in the Virginia area. I have never been able to find anything further back than William Penick. However, with regard to Judith (sometimes spelled Judeth) Pate (Paite), I transcribed some info from a vestry book (I think that's what it's called) regarding the christening of Judith Pate (Paite) in 3 July 1703, St. Peter Parish, New Kent Co., VA.Her father is listed as Jerimayah Paite. No mention of a mother (but that's about par for the course for records in that that time period).Hope that helps any.
I had a theory once about Jerimyah Paite. The only info I had on Jerimyah Paite was that he was born abt 1677.I found a listing at LDS for a JOHN Pate also born in 1677 in VA.I wondered if John and Jerimyah were one and the same (or perhaps twin brothers). If they were the same person, or brothers there was information (research that had been done by another) going all the way back to England in in the early 1500's (possibly the late 1400's; I don't quite remember and I don't have it in my posession) and it connected Jerimyah to a family named DePaite. However, I got so involved in research on another surname (my own) that I never actually pursued the lead.
As usual, none of this is gospel, it is just based on information that I had gleaned from the information of others (with the execption of the info transcribed from the vestry book, and even that can be subject to human error). As for the John & Jerimyah Paite connection- make no mistake, that is just PURE speculation and has not been verified or researched to date.
Anyway, I hope any of this will help.
