Descendants of FREDERICK HISAW/HIGHSAW
Generation No. 1
1.FREDERICK1 HISAW/HIGHSAW was born Abt. 1760 in (Living in Burke County, North Carolina) (Source: Heritage of Walker Co., AL. by Paul L. Hisaw of OK..).
Children of FREDERICK HISAW/HIGHSAW are:
2. i. JOEL2 HISAW, SR., b. 1784.
ii. JAMES HISAW/HIGHSAW, b. 1785, (1820 census Pendleton Dist. SC.) (Source: Heritage of Walker Co., AL. by Paul L. Hisaw.).
Notes for JAMES HISAW/HIGHSAW:
James Highsaw
Born 1785/86 in South Carolina best estimates.By hypothesis son of Frederick Highsaw of Burke County, North Carolina.
From 1820 census of Pendleton District, South Carolina, page 213, there are two Hisaws listed: Henry and James.
By 1832, James, more than likely moved from Pendleton District, SC to Gwinnett County, Georgia whereupon his name is found on the George Land Lottery of that year. When he registered to draw in this lottery he lived in Loveless's Militia District. He drew Lot #65 of the 16th Land District, Third section. This lot of 160 acres fell into old Cass County which was created the same year, 1832.In 1861 the name changed to Bartow, which is its present name.
These records serve to show that James Highsaw/Hisaw continued to live in Georgia, presumably in Gwinnett County until 1839.The fact that James took out the Grant to his land in 1839 suggests that he was preparing to remove from the state and wished to sell the land. Before doing so he could not have disposed of it until the Grant had been issued. This land Grant (1839) is found in Deed Book 3, pages 17 and 18 as originally recorded.Supposedly sometime after 1839 James sold his land in Gwinnett County, Georgia and moved into southern part of Fayette and northern part of Tuscaloosa counties in the state of Alabama.
A James Highsaw received a Land Grant in 1835 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama which contained forty (40) acres and five hundredths (0.05) of an acre.Certificate No. 10647, Pat. 10647, Vol. 21, page 455.
In March 1844 from a page of the Conference for the Baptist Church of Christ, at Salem page 153, Item 5 is recorded, "On motion in order Brethren E. Slaughter, John Willingham, and Calvin Poe were appointed to visit Bro. James Hisaw and report at next conference."The Salem Baptist Church is at New Lexington, Alabama on Highway 43 in Tuscaloosa County, south of the Fayette County line.
In the year 1844, three Hisaw family members supposedly were part of the Charter Membership of Mount Joy Baptist Church near the town of Berry, Alabama circa eight (8) miles from the 1835 Land Grant location. The three persons names among the chartership were: James Hisaw, Lemilia Hisaw and William Hisaw.
From the Black Warrior Baptist Church Minutes this Church was established circa 2 or 3 miles North of the Warrior River in and around the Windham Springs and Blue Creek area wherein aJames Hisaw is recorded as member in 1860, 1862, and 1873.
By hypothesis James Hisaw married Lemilia/Milly whose maiden name is unknown, living in Fayette County, Alabama.Lemilia was born circa 1785 in Kentucky as shown in 1850 census of Fayette County listed by herself on the census.James, born circa 1784 in South Carolina, is shown listed on the 1850 census of Fayette County in the household of John and Sarah Jones. The ages of Lemilia and James from the 1850 census is most compatible for husband and wife.If they were husband and wife, the question has been raised of why they were not together on this census. One possible reason:James was visiting a neighbor or family member when the census taker arrived in the area. Two, Milly was at their home when the census taker arrived and only data from each household was recorded as census arrived per dwelling.
By hypotheses, the James and Lemilia/Milly Highsaw family may have consisted of: (1). James Hisaw, born 1811/12, married Frances H.(2).Eddie Hisaw, born 1813/14, married Henderson Fulton.(3).John P. Highsaw, born 1815/16, married Elizabeth.(4).Nathaniel Hisaw, born 1817/18, married Malinda.(5).Joel Coffey Hisaw, born 1819/20, married Mahala R.(6).Linnie Hisaw, born 1821/22, married Henderson Fulton after 1851.(7).William Riley Hisaw, born 1821/22, married Rebecca Horton.(8).Jessie Hisaw, born 1825/26, married Jane.

My mother, Clisty Irene (Woods) Key and my aunt, Bertie (Woods) Morrow has always said that their great grandmother was a full blooded Cherokee.Irene and Bertie are the daughters of Jesse E. Fondren and Louise Ludisky Pendley.Louise was the daughter of Bennet E. Pendley and Pernetta Ellen (Cherokee Indian).
Some have Pernetta's name as Penetor, but not sure, according to E. Diane (Pendley) Bailey.Pernetta signed a deed for sale of land after Bennet died. She could not write so they signed it for her as P. E. H. Pendley. We do not know what the H. in her name stands for.
