Hi Jack & Janice,
I would so love to clear up the mystery of Benjamin Pendleton. This is what I belileve based on the information available...I believe that Rev. John was born before 1791. Consequently, he is the son of Benjamin and his second wife.
I think the census of 1820 is one of the things that confuses people. The John Pendleton household shows a young male about the age of the oldest female and an older male. I think that most people believe that the older man was the head of the household and thus, his name was John Pendleton. I think that John Pendleton was the young man...that this is Rev. John...and that the older man was Benjamin Pendleton.
Benjamin deeded property to Rev. John for affection and care...and I think he did live with him for a while. I also believe that one of the reasons why we can not find him in later census is that he is not the head of a household...He would turn up as an older male in a household in 1830 and 1840. I am not sure when he died...except the letter indicates that he died within 10 miles of Rye Cove. I believe that. I think that we must rely on its author.
Anyway, sadly I believe that so many errors have been made in publications that our proof and theories would not be well received.
There could be records in Scott Co. that might clear up some of the mysteries.
Good searching...and I hope that you both enjoy a great Thanksgiving.
