Brian Pendleton in America 1600s
My Perry family history, written in 1937 by Charles M. Perry, includes the following about the Pendleton family:
"Brian1 Pendleton was born in England (probably Lancaster County) in 1599.
He came to Watertown, MA in 1634.
He died about 1681.
He was a selectman of Watertown in 1635-7, deputy to the General Court of Mass. Bay Colony in 1636-8.
He moved to Sudbury in 1638 and was deputy from that town.
He was a member of the Artillery Co. in 1646.
In 1648 he was one of a committee to lay out the Winthrop farms and held many positions as surveyor in neighboring sections.
In 1648 he returned to Watertown and was for a brief time deputy to the General Court again.
Later in 1648 he sold his property in Watertown and moved to Strawberry Bank (now Portsmouth NH).
Later he was a trader in Kennebunkport ME.
In 1652 with Simon Bradstreet and others he was chosen by the General Court of Mass to receive Maine under their jurisdiction.
This was accomplished, after a bitter struggle, and submission to Mass. was received on July 4, 1653.
At Portsmouth he was a magistrate and deputy.
He was continually holding civil and military offices and commissions until his death.
In 1664 he was commissioned Capt. at Portsmouth, in 1668 Major for Saco Maine.
In the Indian War of 1676 he was in Winter Harbor and was instrumental in bringing about the treaty of peace with Squano and other chiefs on Apr 12, 1678.
He acquired large holdings of land near Portsmouth and Saco ME and in what is now Westerly RI.
James2 Pendleton was born in England about 1620 and died in Westerly Nov 29, 1709.
He married first Mary ___ in Watertown Nov 1, 1650.
She died Nov 7, 1655 in Sudbury, and he m. 2d Hannah Goodenow.
She was dau of Edmond amd Anne Goodenow.
She died in 1709.
He was freeman in Watertown in 1648.
He lived in Sudbury Mass, Portsmouth NH until 1674.
In 1674 he went to Westerly to look over the land his father Brian had purchased there and decided to move to Westerly and occupy it.
He was in the King Phillip's War in 1676, took the oath of allegiance at Westerly Sep 17, 1679 and was Justice under Gov Dudley 1686-8.
He was moderator and town councilman in 1707-8.
He joined the Presbyterian church at Stonington Nov 7, 1680.
Inventory of his estate was 105 pounds.
Capt. Joseph3 Pendelton was born in Sudbury MA Dec 29, 1661 and was buried Sep 20, 1706 in Westerly.
He married 1st Deborah, dau of Ephriam and Hannah (Avery) Miner Jul 8, 1696.
He married 2d Patience, dau of William Potts Dec 11, 1700.
She outlived Joseph and m. 2d Samuel Rogers.
Joseph took the oath of allegiance Sep 17, 1679, was Town Clerk of Westerly in 1702 and was admitted to the Presbyterian church at Stonington May 24, 1702.
Inventory of his estate was 155 pounds.
Col. Joseph4 Pendleton, son of Joseph3 and Patience, was born Mar 3,1702 in Westerly and died in 1761.
He married Sarah Worden Jan 15, 1723.
He was a member of the Congregational Church of Christ which was organized May 5, 1742 in Westerly.
He was Deputy in 1750 and 1759.
In 1750 he petitioned the General Assembly of Rhode Island that because of the loss of a brigantine laden with rum, molasses &c returning from Anquilla, valued from 18 to 20,000 pounds, uninsured, he was unable to pay his just debts without selling some of his real estate; that he had a farm on the Pawcatuck River, and prayed he might be granted a lottery of 26,000 pounds in which he would put to sale 124 lots of 1/4 to 1/2 A. and 2 houses, for the purpose of paying his debts.
The petition was granted Feb 27, 1750.
The result was the establishment of a community that was, and is now called Lottery Village.
Joseph5 Pendleton was the oldest of 11 children of Joseph4 and Sarah.
He married Anne Champlin of Westerly.
Joseph died at sea later than Aug 1749, probably in 1750.
His two children are spoken of as being orphans in 1750.
Major Joesph6 Pendleton was the older of the two sons of Joseph5 and Anna.
He was born Jan 17, 1747 at Stonington.
He died in Westerly July 9, 1822.
He married 1st Demaris Crandall of Westerly Jan 19, 1766.
They had four children, the last of whom was born Aug 9, 1773.
I have been unable to find the date of her death.
He m. 2d Eunice Babcock?
They had one child, that I have been able to find.
He m. 3d Nancy5 Crandall b Jun 25, 1760, cousin of his first wife, on Mar 23, 1777 at Westerly.
They had 12 children.
The records show that 16 of Joseph's 17 children grew to maturity and married.
He was commissioned Capt by the RI General Assembly at Providence Oct 31, 1775.
He was Major of the 1st regiment of Militia in the County of Kings, May 1779.
Martha7 Pendelton was the 4th child of Joesph and Nancy.
She was born Apr 28, 1785 in Westerly and died Aug 10, 1876 in Wakefield, South Kingstown, RI.
She married Greenman Edwards about 1815.

Major Joseph6 Pendleton is my ancestor for DAR membership.
My DAR records include the following regarding his service during the Revolutionary War:
"In the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, Major Joseph Pendleton was appointed by the RI Assembly in 1775 to raise men for an Army of Observation.
In June 1775 he was made Lieutenant of the First Westerly Company and Captain in October 1775.
He was made Recruiting Officer in Westerly on August 16, 1777.
In August 1778 he commanded a company in Sullivan's Expeditions, Col. J. Noyes Regiment.
In May 1779 he became Major of the First Regiment, Kings County Militia and was reappointed by the Assembly in February 1780 and May 1781."
