Jeffrey,
thanks for your detailed post.
The first reference I can find for the marriage of Agnes Patterson to Philip Pendleton in 1773 comes from Gottschalk and Nicklin's publication in the 1930's.No further info is provided by G&N but is corroborated by "Marriages of Some Virginia Residents, 1607-1800," by Dorothy Ford Walfeck who states that Philip Pendleton (1752-1802) son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Clayton) Anderson m. Agnes Patterson but gives no date.
I should think it possible that this Agnes Patterson and your Ann Patterson are one and the same. And it seems quite possible that her parents were indeed William Patterson and Hannah.
Another interpretation is that Philip married twice - first to Agnes and secondly to Ann.
With no additional info, I lean toward the first interpretation.
I do not think you are confusing two different Philip Pendletons.
