Philip Pendleton (1654-1721), Some Corrections

I noted some incorrect information in some of the posts regarding the family of Philip Pendleton. Rather than address them individually, I thought that I would list them in one post.

Philip Pendleton married Isabella Hurt/Hart. This is based on the Bible records of Edmund Pendleton (1721-1803). No date was specified for this marriage, however, it was listed after Philip's return from England in 1680. Therefore, the marriage occurred in Virginia, not in England. Since their first son, Henry, was shown as born about 1683, it is generally assumed that the marriage occurred about 1682. The general consensus, based on a review of the early families of Virginia, is that Isabella Hurt/Hart was the daughter of William Hurt (and possibly his wife in 1701, Margaret). This William Hurt was listed on a patent on 26 October 1650, so he was in Virginia prior to that date.

Henry Pendleton, son of Philip and Isabella, married Mary Taylor. This is per the Bible records of Edmund Pendleton (1721-1803). Mary is sometimes referred to as Mary Bishop Taylor based on the mistaken belief that her maternal great-grandfather was Robert Bishop. I have researched these families extensively and this link is not correct. There is no surviving record that shows Mary's name as anything other Mary.

Isabella Pendleton, daughter of Henry Pendleton and Mary Taylor, married William Gaines. This marriage is also listed in the Bible records of Edmund Pendleton (1721-1803). Many people show this William Gaines as William Henry Gaines. This is based on an incorrect reading of court records in which punctuation, like commas, was frequently omitted in early records. There is no surviving court record that shows William Gaines' name as anything other than William. The ancestry of William Gaines, which is shown in many books and on the internet as being in Wales, is unsupported by any court records, either in Virginia or Wales.

Benjamin Gaines, son of William Gaines and Isabella Pendleton, is shown by some to have married Elizabeth Claiborne Botts. Since middle names were still uncommon when she was born in the first half of the 17th century, it is highly improbable that Elizabeth's middle name was Claiborne. In the few court records in which her name is listed, it is simply shown as Elizabeth. I have found no connection between the Botts and the Claiborne families which would even justify giving Elizabeth the name, Claiborne, as a middle name.
