Oops, Karen, I never answered you about birthplaces. That's partly because it's all very confusing. Most of the information I've seen on RootsWeb says John was born in N.C. and Jane in S.C.I do know, however, not to believe much of what I read there. The information on the Find-A-Grave website which pictures their graves with birth and death dates (but not places) says the same.As I posted earlier, by the 1880 census John had already died. That census says Jane and her parents were all born in North Carolina, and that her daughter's father (i.e. John) was born in South Carolina. So I don't really know where they were born, but I think I'd tend to go with the census.
FYI, the 1880 census has Jane living with her widowed daughter and widowed son, and two young boys who the census called Jane's sons (she was 63 and they were 7 and 5), when actually they were her daughter's sons.I'm fairly confident of this because the younger son was my husband's grandfather, and after he died my husband's grandmother married his older brother -- the names in the census are the same as the names of grandfather and step-grandfather, and ages are correct as well.
Hope I haven't confused you mercilessly.I'm pretty confused myself, and am afraid I have not been much help.
