Pernat/Pirnat, my Croatian husband informs me, are Slovenian names. Slovenia is a very tiny country just to the north of Croatia, and just south of Austria. Here's acess to a map: http://www.uvi.si/eng/slovenia/map/

It gained its independence from the former Yugoslavia in 1991 with very little violence, unlike the rest of that unfortunate country.

You can try to contact the Slovene government, or the Catholic Church in Slovenia for any info about your family. The Church is probably your best bet for 19th century and prior info.
