Hi Mary,
Mary Ann Pendarvis was born between 1719 and 1733 in Charleston and died in 1795 in present Dorchester County, SC. She married David Rumph and had several children, including Sarah born May 7, 1753. Sarah married James Dewitt, not William. William was a witness to the will of David Rumph, Sr., and very likely a nephew or other relative to James, but Sarah was married to James. They married before 1772 and had several children, Ann, David, James, John, Sarah, William, and probably others.

In notes gathered by the historian Alexander Salley, it was written that Sarah, known as Sarah Rumph Dewitt, married first John Robinson and had at least one son, and then married Jacob McMichael and had three more children. Her son, Cephas Manly McMichael, was Alexander Salley's grandfather and well known to him. It seems likely that McMichael would have given his well educated grandson the correct information. Copies of the information gathered by Salley survived in my branch of the family too, as I am also descended from Cephas Manly McMichael.

I've found mistakes in some of Salley's work, but on this point his source was well known to him. My guess is that your Sarah is not from this line, though possibly connected to a member of James Dewitt's family through a brother. James did have two children, Charles and Catherine, from a previous marriage. Charles is close to the correct age to have been a young father to Sarah, but she is not mentioned in his estate papers.

Good Luck,
Randy
