Many thanks for the pointers. I checked Amanda Carman and was going to check Mary A. but got distracted and never got at it. I sure wish the new FamilySearch files were in a different format. The contrast between the text and the background is poor for those of us with aging eyes. Normally, the colors can be changed on the receiving end but not with the new format.
With the correct death date of 1911 for Elijah, it looks like Amanda applied for a pension under a 1913 law. The 1890 date on the pension index card may have been an application by him for a disability pension.
