I, too, am looking for a connection between Pembroke and Gosling.I am researching the ancestors of Thomas Pembroke Gosling, born 1851 in Sydney, Colony of New South Wales (now part of Australia) to John William Gosling and Catherine Raymond.John Gosling was born in London 1798 where his father held the post of Deputy-secretary to the victualling department at Somerset House, and he emigrated to NSW in persuance of his company's business interests. Catherine was born at Hollywood House, Croagh Parish, Limerick, Ireland in 1814. Her father, James, was a magistrate for the County of Limerick although he was from Riversdale House, Killmeany, in County Kerry. I don't know who his parents were.Catherine's mother was the daughter of William Odell who progressed from being the High Sherriff of County Limerick, to being a Member of Parliament, to holding the office of Lord of the Admiralty. Catherine and her family emigrated to Sydney in 1826. I am curious to discover why Thomas would be given the middle name 'Pembroke' (which he passed on to one of his sons) when others in the family were commonly given family surnames for middle names.
Any help appreciated.Shirley
