I recently came across a 1931 Chicago Tribune article with picture of one "Mrs. Ollie Clermont" demonstrating a fencing maneuver.I'm thinking this was probably Aline (Pelton) Clermont, wife of Edmond J. Clermont.Edmond, of course, was head of the Franco-American National Academy of Fencing, which he founded and operated in Chicago from the mid-1920s to early 1930s -- before the family moved to New York. The article also included comments by Edmond on the sport of fencing and how, from his experience as instructor, women approached it differently than men.
I discovered the Tribune story recently after learning that my grandmother, an amateur fencer, had trained at the Franco-American National Academy and later gave a fencing demonstration with her teacher Edmond Clermont at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair.Would be happy to send the 1931 Tribune article to any Clermont descendants who'd be interested in seeing it...Michael Kelly / [email protected]
