Pelot family's European origins

My great grandfather immigrated to America (Missouri, to be more specific) from France in the 1870's. He was supposed to have come from the Alsace-Lorraine region. Every French person I've talked to about his name says it is not from that part of France, but possibly from the south of France. Can anyone tell me where they think the name originates from. Also,his family was the only non-Catholic one of all my French ancestors. Is that true of the other Pelot families?
