We have a fair number of matching names, but it seems some first names were VERY popular in the 19th century. My GG father was a John Peirson, born @ 1856, and was also from the North Riding of Yorkshire. It's believed his father's name was Richard, mother Hannah. According to the baptismal records from Egton, not far from Whitby, Richard and Hannah had 8 or more children. John's name does not appear in baptismal records, but he shows up in the 1881 census, aged 25, living with father Richard, who is reported to be a widower, aged 70. Since this would put Richard's birth year around 1811, he would be a contemporary, if not an actual sibling of your ancestor.

I haven't come across many folks in North America who actually stuck with the Peirson spelling. Please contact me again if you'd like to correspond further.

Pat McNamee (nee Peirson)
