Pegram does not mean Pilgrim?

My great grandfather was Edward Herbert Peggram (or Pegram) of Stoke Newington, London. He was of East Anglian gipsy descent. Some of the earliest gipsies in Britain told a story of being on a "pilgrimage" - and ended up being registered with variations on the surname Pegram. Personally I think that the meaning of this surname has nothing to do with the word Pilgrim. "Pilgrim", pronounced by someone with very little English, could easily be heard as "Pegram". My guess is that its of French origin.
