I too would love to find proof of this marriage but it is my honest opinion, after 30 years of searching, that no such proof exists because there was never any basis for the assumption. Without going into details, many years ago I talked to the people who first advanced this possibility and they freely admitted that they had NO BASIS for the assumption. The people responsible were fine noted genealogists but in this particular case they only "suggested" the possibility without realizing that it would be published and republished as fact. If we ever prove the identity of Daniel's wife, it will only be after we abandon this assumption and look elsewhere. The ONLY reason the connection was ever "suggested" was based on the fact that: (1) Daniel named his youngest son Gideon; (2) they both came to Granville Co. about the same time; and (3) George (1) Pegram's wife was a Hunt. For my money, this is not enough to even think that Frances was a Macon any more than she might have been a Riggan, Bell, or a dozen other families that came to Granville Co. from Va. and settled in the same general vicinity. If you look at all the early Granville, Bute, Warren Co. records, it becomes obvious that there was no close relationship between the Macons and Pegrams. There was a close continuing relationship between the Pegrams and Riggans, Bells and Hartons. With 1 or 2 exceptions where Daniel was a witness on an instrument executed by Gideon Macon, there is very little to even suggest they knew each other. Daniel appears as a witness on numerous documents executed by many people. If that was all that was needed to prove a marriage, his wife could have been almost anyone. Remember, the genealogists (2) who "suggested" this connection agreed they had NO basis for the suggestion beyond those stated here. This is one time I would dearly love to be proven wrong and I will gladly donate a considerable sum to a genealogy organization of one's choice to be proven wrong but I don't think I have to worry about saving my coins yet.
