The Peery's
First.. Hello to all my Peery Cousins. I am the Great Grandson of Thomas Peery IV, also known as Captain Thomas Peery of Burkes Gardens Virginia. I'm sure we have all been a bit confused by all the name change stuff (Peery, Perry, Perrie, etc..) and the confusion is understandable. And I have hit the "Brick Wall" as well. The Peery line seems to go back to John Perry (Peery) of Knock Lofty. But that is as far as I can go. There is an earlier "Mary Peery" but I can make no connection. I believe that the Peery's of Ireland were originally from Scotland, but I cannot proove this.
As a note about the name change... I have a thought.. The Peery's of Tipperary were most likely of Scottish descent. This meant that they were probably Catholic (Forced to move from Scottland). The John Peery born in Knock Lofty in 1640 would have been there at the time of great persecution by the English. Irish Catholics were even being sold as slaves at this time and their land and all assets were being seized by the Military. My thought is that the Peerys of Ireland were trying to escape. The Colonies were still part of the British Empire. Perhaps changing the spelling of their names had something to do with this. It might also be noted that these first Peerys (in America) probably could not write, and they spoke Gaelic. The spelling of their name could have been a complete mystery to them. If anyone has any thoughts about this, or can help me link to earlier Peery's, please contact me.
Robert Smith
