Just some rambling thoughts. My first interpretation was that David Peebles was a Royalist officer in Scotland, but I have since concluded that, as your records show, he was a merchant there and was a captain after he came to Virginia. My reason for thinking he was a Royalist, although not necessarily run out of Scotland for it, was that his evidently rapid rise to influence in Virginia suggests he was chummy with Governor Berkeley, who was a Royalist if ever there was one.The Bishop and Poythress alliances further suggest gentry standing and the gentry were usually Royalist in sentiment, knowing on which side their bread was buttered.A great many supposed Royalist escapees to Virginia managed to bring out numbers of servants and to acquire large landholdings over here; in fact, one expects it of Royalist emigres because it was so common. That is, those who were said to be Royalists, which reads well if a family had a little money, or at least a set of silver buckles and what in that age passed for manners.
Elspet Mackie died in Scotland, didn't she, before David came over?I have never thought he left her behind; I did think he left William behind, according to Anne Peebles' wording in "Peebles Ante," as you have observed.
