Capt. David Peebles , Clan affiliations
All descendants of Capt. David Peebles and his first wife, Elspeth Mackie are entitled to become members of the Mackay Clan, through Elspeth.
With Peebles, we are simply a Sept of the Hay Clan ( association through marriage) with Mackay, we are full clan (female descent bears as much weight as male under the old clan system).
My question regarding the involvement, or not of David Peebles with the English Civil War, is this. If David simply left Scotland to form a new plantation, which seems credible. Why did he split and scatter his family? Elspeth stayed behind, his younger children stayed behind, his eldest son William left with him. It rather smacks of getting out fast doesn't it? However, one thing regarding the story has always puzzled me. In 1648 America was still a colony, subject to British Law. Most men who fled the Civil War , fled to France.
Why could not Cromwell reach his great arm over to Virginia to cause problems for Peebles if he were one of the 300?
