James, I was very interested in your posting re the Irish branch of the Pedley family, it seems from the information you have supplied that there is every possibility that there is a connection to my wife's family tree which we have been researching. My wife's Great-Grandfather was Ernest James Pedley, born in 1887, the 3rd Son of Arthur G Pedley and Mary Ann Elizabeth Pedley (nee Stokes). He had four Brothers :- Herbert ("Bert"), b. 1883 Alfred ("Alf"), b. 1885 Harold ("Harry"), b. 1890 and Frederick ("Fred"), b. After 1891, plus two sisters; Gladys and Nellie, both born after 1891. The family came from Pertenhall, which is a small village approx 15 miles from Bedford. The family had lived in this village, and the surrounding villages of Keysoe and Staughton since the 1700s, we have traced the family line back to 1764. Arthur Pedley also had a brother Frederick, born in 1863. During WW1 Ernest and his brothers all served in the Army. Bert was in the Army Service Corps, Alf in the Machine Gun Corps and Ernest in the Royal Fusiliers. Ernest was killed in action in 1917. During research I have discovered that a Frederick S Pedley, born in Pertenhall, served in The Huntingdonshire Cyclist Battalion (a local Territorial Regiment) and later in the Royal Berkshire Regiment, where he was wounded in 1917. After WW1 the families seem to have dispersed. My wife has two Great-Aunts, the surviving daughters of Ernest Pedley, who have told us that their uncle went to Ireland some time after WW1. They were sure it was Fred, though they were both very young at the time and are now 90 and 87, so memory is not perfect. Could this be your grandfather Frederick ? We have press-cuttings which were kept by my wife's Grandmother (Ernest's other daughter) which record that when Mary Pedley died (in the 1940s) Fred Pedley attended with his wife. When Alf Pedley died in 1965 his brother Fred attended the funeral, when Alf's widow died the following year he was there again. There are numerous Pedleys living in Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, though none now in Pertenhall or nearby as far as we can ascertain. We haven't so far been able to trace any descendants of Ernest Pedley's brothers or sisters, so would be very interested to know if there is indeed a connection to your family. I look forward to hearing from you. Regards Paul McAllister Notify Administrator about this message?
