P., Barton, Elizabeth E., and Phebe A.; Benj. and Barton are dead; the last two died in the army."

Directory of Warren County, Liberty Township, pp. 619-620.

From a History of Warren Co., Iowa (1908) Source: (compiled by Mrs. Buela Imhoff)

"In Liberty Twsp., Mark Williams was the 3rd settler. The first recorded entry of land was of John Williams, June 29, 1849. Samuel James, Robert Kester, and James Coles made settlements further south on Otter Creek. The township was organized and named Liberty because may of the early settlers were abolitionists and some had left their eastern homes because of the contention over the rights of the slave. James Coles, who named the township, was known to be very much opposed to the fugitive slave law and assisted more than one slave to escape into Canada. Joseph N. Coles taught the first school."

From History of Liberty Center Methodist Church, by Mrs. Orville Thompson. Source: (compiled by Mrs. Buela Imhoff)

"The M.E. church at Liberty Center was organized in 1856. The first minister was J. W. Todd. The charter members were: Enoch and Polly Matson, John and Rachel Matson, Jerry and Juliann Matson, William and Mahalis Berry, Sarah Coles, Jerry and Mary Berry, and Polly and Ellen Coles.

"The minister held a revival meeting that winter in a log cabin located where the Christian church used to stand southwest of Liberty Center. There were a goodly number of converts at this meeting. When the period for probation for new members had expired, the membership had increased to eighty. It was decided to secure a building for worship. In 1860, the original part of the building of S. J. Shupe's store was leased and afterwards purchased of Nathan Mosher for a church. They worshipped in this building on the corner until 1870 when the original part of the present church was erected. In 1906, the church was enlarged. The lot the church stands on was donated by Jerry Boston. The trustees were J. P. McFarland, Joseph Michael, W. E. Vanderventer, Benjamine Coles and W. H. McKenney."

From page copied from published book, source: Buela Imhoff

"In the fall of 1856, Rev. J. W. Todd, John and George Conrad, conducted revival services which continued at intervals far into the summer of 1857. A Methodist church was organized with the following members: Enoch and Polly Matson, John and Rachel Matson, Benj. and Julianna Matson, William and Mahala Berry, Sara Coles, and Mary and Sarah Berry. Polly and Ellen Coles were the first probationers; Joseph Michael, the first class leader; and Jacob Garbison, the first local preacher."

Notes for JESSE PENROSE:

"This family transferred their Friends membership from Maiden Creek to Crooked Run, Va. on 5/30/1787, to Redstone, Pa. on 2/28/1803, and to Plainfield, Ohio on 12/30/1814. Since St. Clairsville was under the auspices of the Plainfield Friends, it seems likley that this family lived in Belmont County. All of Jesse and Sarah's children, except Robert, were disowned by the Society of Friends for either disunity of marrying outside that faith. Sarah was disowned at Redstone, Pa. March 3, 1815."

Jim Eakins relayed the following information in an e-mail to me, William Long, on September 3, 2001:

His estate was probated in Jun 1836; Jesse gives everything to his youngest daughter, Sarah (Penrose) Workman of Belmont County.15[Correspondence with Frank Merriman (unknown author address) to Jim Eakins; Lynne and Jim Eakins Genealogy Collection (Box 876, 134 Main Street, Middleton, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, Canada B0S 1P0). A letter he sent to Alta (Penrose) Robb., Has a copy of Jesse's will.]

Jesse removed to Berks County in 1775, taking a certificate from Richland Monthly Meeting to Exeter Monthly Meeting, 21 September 1775.

Jesse and Sarah pioneered Monongalia County, Ohio along with the Conner's and Severn's and Beat(t)y's and Meredith's. They all migrated together and inter-married and God knows what else, from Virginia to Ohio and then some to Illinois where I was raised. I have the Conner's, Severn's, and Beaty's back to Pennsylvania and the Meredith's back to Deleware and Pennsylvania, but little on the Penrose's. [Raymond C. Beaty]

[:TAB:Jesse and Sarah moved from Berks County to Lycoming County. They went from there to Monongalia County (now Preston County, West Virginia. They then removed to Belmont County.[Dorothy Craft].2,16,3,14

Notes for ABRAHAM PENROSE:

The following information was sent to me by Jim Eakins via e-mail on September 3, 2003:

"Abraham was a Private in the Pennsylvania Militia and a survivor of the War of 1812. He served in Captain Leonard Cupp's Company of the Virginia Militia. [Raymond Beaty]

From the "History of Preston County (WV)", by S.T. Wiley, 1882, we read: "This Company volunteered in Preston County, Va., rendezvoused at Morgantown, marched to Point Pleasant, where they were reorganized, and from there they marched to Fort Meigs, where they served a term of six months. This company experienced great hardships on the march to Fort Meigs, often having to cut bushes to lie on at night to keep them out of the water." [Raymond Beaty]

Because he joined the Militia, Abraham was disowned by the Quakers in 1804. [Betty Gardner]"
