Philip Pearce received land in Isle of Wight Co., VA, in a deed of gift from George Pearce, blacksmith, 9 Sep 1684 [Indenture of land sale dated 3 Mar 1757, I of WDeed Book 9, pp. 466-467]. This strongly suggests that Philip was a son of George Pearce, blacksmith.
Two deeds in 1724/5 record Philip Pearce as "Sr", implying that a "Jr" was around.Philip Pierce, Sr. of Upper Parish IofW gave his son George Pearce for love & affection 100a in Lower Parish on 23 Jan 1724/25 [IofW Deed Book 2, p. 693].The same month Phillip Pierce, Sr., sold 100a to John Teasley, and Phillip's wife Sarah relinquished her dower [Deed Book 2, pp. 694-695].
The will of Philip Pearce, Sr., was recorded 22 Apr 1728[IofW Will Book 3, pp. 77-78].He left his house & 200a to his wife Sarah for the rest of her life or until she remarried. On her passing the property was to pass to his son Nathan, and if he should die without issue to his sons Arthur and Simon in turn.
In Jan 1730/31, two years after Philip Sr. died, Philip Pearce [the son] deeded to George Pearce [his brother] 280a[W.L. Hopkins cites IofW Deed Book 4, p. 83]. Philip Jr & his wife, Sarah, were in Bartee Precinct the following year, as you have noted. It seems the son named after his father married a woman with the same name as his mother, making it easy to get the generations confused.
Regards,
David
