David,
I suspect that there were multiple George and Philip Pearces in Isle of Wight. You and I will both have to give more information when we speak of them.
The Philip I spoke of, and his wife Sarah, sold 100 acres in Isle of Wight to John Teasley on Jan 23, 1724. The deed said Philip and Sarah were "of the upper parish." The land was part of a patent for 2005 acres granted George Peirce. The origin of this land, and other land Philip got from George, is the only clue I have that George Pearce may have been Philip's father,Philip and Sarah were identified as being of Bertie Precinct in North Carolina, and they had come back to sell the land.
In another deed Philip and his wife Sarah, sold 160 acres in Isle of Wight to William Ashburn on Jun 23, 1732. The land was part of 2100 acres formerly granted to George Pearce in 1674. In this deed Philip and Sarah were identified as being of Bertie Precinct in North Carolina, so they had at some time after 1724 moved, and had apparently come back to sell the land.
On the dates of both of the above deeds Philip Pearce was married to Sarah Pearce.
There are three deeds in Bertie Precinct in Puilip's name (without Sarah). They is one in 1735 and two in 1737.In all three the land is being sold, and we learn from the estate administration of Philip in Isle of Wight recorded July 24, 1738 and signed by his wife Sarah that he had come back to die and that he was married to Sarah to the end.
Do the dates furnished above help you determine whether this is the Philip Pearce from whom you are descended?Do you have any information that would confirm whether this George Pearce is a different one than yours?
The Stephenses I have been studying seem to have originated in Isle of Wight and made their way through Bertie and Edgecombe Precincts to Johnston, Duplin and Sampson Counties in inland North Carolina. The information on them is incomplete so we have to grasp at every straw.I am trying to connect an Edward Stephens who died with a will in 1751 in Johnston County with the Edward Stephens who died intestate in Isle of Wight in 1741.Edward Stephes' name is very uncommon in NC so we know that he was not there until 1743/44.This makes us suspect that he stayed in Isle of Wight until the Edward there had died. Was it his father? His grandfather?Edward of the estate was not called "Senior."A surviving Edward who owed money and tobacco to the estate was not called "Junior."He and Sarah Pearce jointly owed the tobacco.I guessed that they might have owed jointly because they were brother and sister, and that would have made Sarah a Stephens. On the other hand, Sarah was by then a widow, so there could have been another kind of relationship. It would help a lot if someone who knows the Pearces could tell me the maiden name of Philip's wife.
The source material I have could be of help to you if your line came through North Carolina.I don't know how much you have on Isle of Wight but we might be able to help each other there. I have a complete copy of the Hopkins deed abstracts and I have Book II of Blanche Adams Chapman's Wills and Administrations, 1647 - 1800.Do you have Book I?I also have the complete index and about 50 of the 650 pages of the book Seventeenth Century ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY VIRGINIA.The index has 42 references to Pearces, but I only have pages that intersected with names like Stephens, Raiford, Edwards and Stevenson that I was researching.
Let me know if I can be of any help.
genforum notified me of your posting by email address but gave me no way I could email directly to you. I don't mind doing this through genforum because others may read it who have something to add, but if you ever have troublr getting a response from me try my email.
