James Houston Peacock b.1912 - TX?

I'm trying to figure out what happened to the two toddlers that Janey Elizabeth Parker (b.1920 in Elgin - Bastrop Co - TX) had with James Houston Peacock b.1912. (Not sure where he was born, but he was adopted). Evidently, from what's on familysearch, James abandoned the two toddlers. Then Janey re-married in 1945 in CA - Elmer Eugene Winter. I don't have any info on the two children after searching all the last names Parker, Peacock, Winters.

If you don't know what happened to the children, can someone tell me what the 'trend' was back then under these circumstances?? Would the children typically carry the mother's maiden name or the fathers name (who left them) - or the new father's name after she re-married?

Thanks so much for your help!
