I wonder if anyone can please inform me of the family of the Francois Payette who settled early in Idaho (and has rivers, a lake, a city, county and national forrest named for him.) I am particularly interested to learn details of his parents, wife and children, when and where he was born and something of his ancestry. Was the pacific northwest historian, B. C. Payette, a descendant of Francois?

I have read a few postings on this forum regarding this Francois Payette. I thought I would add a few facts:
He was employed innitially by the Pacific Fur Company (half owned by John Jacob Astor, and based in New York). Payette arrived at the mouth of the Columbia River in 1810 on the ship Tonquin. These men built Fort Astoria (now Astoria, Oregon). Francois Payette worked as a trader for the Pacific Fur Comapny until 1814 when it was bought out by the (Canadian) Northwest Company; he would have been working in Oregon, Washinton and Idaho (and perhaps into westerrn Montana) during this time. He was with McKenzie's Snake Country expeditions (at least some of the time) between 1816 and 1821 which took him to what is now Idaho. When the Northwest Co. merged with Hudson's Bay Co., Payette remained in their employ. He may also have been with Peter Skene Ogden (at least part of the time) during his Snake expeditions in the 1820s. Payette was in charge of the trading post that became Fort Boise and was still there when emigrants began blazing the Oregon trail.

I am writing a book on another trader/trapper/hunter who was with Payette: John Day. By book includes a history of the fur trade west of the rockies prior to 1800s, and sketches on various men who were involved in the region.

I would appreciate anything anyone could share on Francois Payette's birthdate/place and family. I am familiar with pacific northwest geography and used to live in Garden Valley, Idaho along the Middle and South Forks of the Payette River. My fiance's family lives in the Payette (town) area. Thanks!
