Dear Krystal- There are several very serious reasons the St. Amour dit Payette family has little history or genealogy. Francois Payette was the Francis Pate who discovered Yosemite Valley, and for whom Pate Valley in that area is named. Below is a letter I sent to a cousin recently, in which I discussed with him aspects of my study of it, which has gone on more or less all my seventy years, beginning with questions asked my grandparents about our Pate ancestors who were very much involved with the Siouan Chicoran and other Indians of the Southeast. It is not intended for children, as you will see. The Sioux originally controlled the trade of the Virginia/Carolinas area, before they were systematically destroyed by the "Long Knives." The flavor of that business may be savored in the John Bennett Pate study of the Pate family. The Sioux, with their buffalo were too powerful a nation, allied with Spanish Sephardim, to be allowed to remain intact as a nation. I wish you well in your study of a very sensitive subject, that relates to modern Stuart dynastic aspirations, which must be understood to follow the argument. Pates were associated with the McDonald clan in the Patetown, NC, area. This is very complicated. The below just scratches the surface of a much longer story I have talked about in other writings which are actively suppressed in the Carolinas: 21 December 2001 Dear Buddy- It was years after I graduated from college before I learned what "classical" education is all about. My interests are such that I should have majored in Literature or History, instead of Biology, but I was turned off of History, by Dr. Gordon Chappel, who was anciently related to Pates. I have come to realize Dr. Chappel knew much more about our antecedents than I did. Dr. "Tommie" Thompson was an old UNC football star, who also "secrets" about Indians. He also knew the real significance of Pliny, Seneca, Tacitus and others of the ancient annalists. I could not picture myself as an English teacher at the time, however. The real problem was that I didn't know what to look for in the old writings, about things that are "not something to talk about." I've learned some sense since. Our adventures in Afghanistan are a continuation of the tragicomic THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING by Rudyard Kipling. It has made me think about the tribal conflicts of Native Americans (whose factional divisions were their undoing) whom I have studied and written about, in efforts to understand our ancestors' involvement with them. My interest in Abelard Reuchlin is in his developing notoriety as author of an interesting piece about Romans of Patavium, who were antecedents of bearers of my surname. In it he claims that it is traditional Jewish family lore that Christianity is a hoax, perpetrated by the family known to students of the Roman Annalistic Tradtion as the Calpurnii Pisones. According to Reuchlin, they were to Christian scriptures as the Bacons, DeVeres, et al, were to the writngs of Shakespeare. I have often wondered if the butcher boy of Avon was kosher. Our family in America had interesting involvements, but a fragmented history. The story of Thoroughgood still can not be told. I send the below for your information: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE PATE NAME AND VARIATIONS THEREOF By Al Pate For a long time I have shared some old mythology involving the Pate family, in the hope that someone who knew it would tell the whole story of Trojan refugees, who founded Romes and Troys in America. Some of what I wrote may have been more confusing than enlightening. This is an effort to cast more light on the subject. The whole story is more than can be told. I recently got from Barnes& Noble a copy of an odd little booklet by Abelard Reuchlin that contains cabalistic numerology material that may be confusing. For us the main point of it is that it is a canard against our ancient ancestors who traditionally were descended from Romulus, a founder of Rome. They were rich millers of the senatorial-class Piso family, some members of which took the surname Paetus (used by Calpurnius as Thrasea Paetus), from which many variations derived. Paetus evolved into scattered forms of the name all over Europe and Asia, into such names as Payette, Payte, Peete (pronounced pay et), Pettus, Pait, Pate, Pett, and even Payton, Patterson, and Patton, and many others. The famous Roman senatorial bearer of the name was an Arius Calpurnius Piso, who (with his various relatives, under desperate political circumstances) took the name all over the world in its various forms. The Pisos are also accused of taking the name Flavius Josephus as a pen name. It is recorded that the father of St. Patrick was named Calpurnius! Pett is a famous English shipbuilding name. Phineas Pett developed the maneuverable frigate that enabled the English to dominate the seas, and rendered the Spanish galleons obsolete. Thomas Pate was the American shipbuilder who was a friend of Nathaniel Bacon (rebel grandson of Sir Francis Bacon (Shakespeare)), and who was the ferryman at Yorktown, Virginia, in the generation before the defeat of the English there. His housekeeper was Joan Lawson, whom I take to be the daughter of John Lawson, earliest "developer" of North Carolina. The lunatic sensationalist David Icke has accused the descendants of the original Calpurnius Piso of being involved in an international cospiracy to variously exploit the world through complex Roman and English colonial enterprises, in the form and name of Christianity. My own impression is that the Piso descendants were sincere fighters against the worst kinds of exploitive imperialism, that was perhaps at its worst under the Julian Caesar Nero. Nero sentenced Calpurnius Piso (AKA Thrasea Paetus) to death. Thrasea, I believe, survived this death sentence, but his friends Marcus and Lucius died. The sort of Mithraic Stoicism the Pisos advocated is exemplified by Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, who was a direct descendant of Calpurnius Piso, whose descendants may have participated in the spread of faith based on the historical Jesus. Suffice it to say, there is some debate over the authorship of some New Testament books. Reuchlin confusingly discusses some of this in THE TRUE AUTHORSHIP OF THE NEW TESTAMENT. The miller-baker thing is interesting in the context of the tradition and literature of the world. William Patterson, of Lanarkshire, Scotland, developer of the English banking system is memorialized as "the pattycake man" in the nursery rhyme that grew out of his Darien (Guiana) "South Sea Bubble" fiasco, as a result of which he was obliged to live out his old age in the Carribean. Some bearers of our name suffered much worse fates in the New World, to which they flocked after the expulsion of Jews from Europe. Among the "Virginia Company adventurers" (investors) were Petts, Peets and Pettuses, and a variety of settlers of Virginia bore the name in forms such as Pate, Payte, Peat, Pait, Peete, etc., sometimes varying within the same housefold. You know from my various writings about our ancestors how their enterprises turned out. It is worth noting, in the context of Reuchlin's booklet, that one of our earliest Patetown ancestors was a Charles (father of Shadrach I), the son of Thoroughgood Pate, who was killed by Col. John Barnwell, because Thoroughgood resisted the terrible abuses of the Indians by Barnwell. I have resolved to say no more about our family, but it may be helpful for you to know of the above, in the context of The Revelation of Jesus Christ by John. My own father railed against much that was "not something to talk about." His policy of non-attribution was more confusing than enlightening. Not a few would argue we are now in Apocalyptic times. It is easy to imagine provocation of a subjectively desperate Islam to another, perhaps last, battle on the Plain of Armageddon. It is not clear to me that Pres. Bush is sufficiently mindful of the history of Islam. Righteousness is subjective. A righteous man has the strength of ten, because his heart is pure. Few Americans have many illusions about their righteousness. Ours is a culture of cynical materialism, the god of which is Mammon. We are culturally incapable of seeing a problem in this. The Bible says we are killed daily because of our ignorance. That is meaningless to most, but Martin Luther and Voltaire saw it clearly. Our culture is closely held and carefully monitored. Our history is carefully edited, and selectively published. We are literally manipulated to cyclic economic and personal destructions, by spiritual forces that are invisible to most. I'm sad to say, I seem to see them. In pursuit of some of the phantoms I referred to in our history, I have written little pieces that touch some of the precious jewels I have been able to see in study of our family's past. I have been given to see much, grasp some--and pondered how to tell it. It is not rewarding to write what people don't want to know. Pates have never endeared themselve by telling folks what they want to hear. I will keep this short and simple. I'm not trying to be creative. The truth is overwhelming. Fiction is the allegory that is its own fact. It provides the metaphors with which we cover evil of our circumstances. The above and the below are not fiction. There is truth that can not yet bear the light of official History. That is why fiction is the popular diversion it is. Fiction can tell us what happened, without taking any of the blame for it. It is clear to me that our ancestors were deep in intrigues that long preceded the murder of Thoroughgood Pate, that have not even been told in fiction. This sets the stage for history stranger and more interesting than fiction. Fiction is a weak vessel for a story as heavy as that I've tried to tell. Our history is traceable in our names., particularly the names of places and leaders. The names of some can not be traced, such as that of Chief Paget of the Corees, which would have been pronounced "Pa het", among the Spanish with whom they were associated in politicaly tainting adventures. Many histories have been carefully erased. Our name has not been erased, but it has an obscuring variety of forms scattered all over the world, that confuses understanding of our ancestors' roles in the drama of our past. I have told some, my belief is that the name Pate is in America a legacy from William of St. Amour (of a place called Holy Love), who took the surname Payette, as the Brythonic rendition of Son of A Lesser Faith (ap Fayette), in religious and political exile from France. But this is a relatively modern form of the name, and a deliberate play on words., but it ties in interestingly with Templars and McDonalds in Canada. It was clear to William Pate of St. Amour that something was desperately wrong, when the year 1000 was a couple of hundred years past, and the world was not dramatically changed by the return of Jesus. In the 1200's The Church owned and controlled everything--ruthlessly. William of St. Amour was a prominent churchman in France, who wanted to change the system. Secularists like William of St. Amour were the spiritual and operational antecedents of the Templars--who wrung much from The Church. Pate has long been a name in association with the Primitive Baptist faith, which is a form of Christianity not much different from the religion of the Jews who accepted Jesus as the Messiah. I will try to explain some of this. To make of it a scientific dissertation would require a doctoral type thesis, with an appropriate bibliography. I'll spare you that, and leave it to my critics to provide it--long after I'm gone from this veil. Fayette is the diminutive of the French word Faye, which is the larger official Faith of The Church (generally identified as the Roman Catholic organization), of the millennium that followed the publication of The Gospels of the official Christian religious canon, whether Roman or Orthodox Catholic, or the preceding Gnostic (which was officially suppressed by the ecclesiastic government that succeded the Pagan Roman Empire, that was subverted by the Antonine emperors to a Mithraic Stoicism). Religion is essential to government, since the irreligious are ungovernable. But all religions are not equally good as bases for government. All of us have family origins lost in the past. To keep this simple, I have only taken our story back to to the time of Christ. At that time the name was spelled in Roman Italy as Paeto (from paetus, Venus-eyed). It was the name of a family in association with the Calpurnius Piso family, authors of the "Q" source of the the Christian Gospels, who were associated with Aeneas Seneca in an insurrection against Nero. I had some trouble with this, when I first learned of it. I checked it out, and found it to be true--but little known. The key person in that political exercise was P. Thraesea Paetus (pronounced "Pate us" by the Romans. As a sop to sceptics, I urge them to see Hoitsema's work written in 1852. I spent much time in the Washington D.C. area, where I had opportunity to study the historical obscurities that gave our name such a variety of modern spellings, e.g. Peet (Italian), Pait (Portuguese), Payette (French), Peat (Welsh), Pet (Dutch, Paget (Spanish), etc.. Religion and economics drove the variation and scattering of our people and our name. Religion is the way we systematically deal with the overriding complexity of our own little localized personalized realities and crushing crises. The concensus of all religions is that they are based on interactions between our terrestrial animal ancestors and beings from somewhere other than Earth. It's base may be in our failure to recognize all of Earth's people as human beings--and calling some of them gods. Differences in dress, technology, modes of transportation, communication, etc., made it easy for defeated people to attribute to their new masters otherworldly origins. Race is a very fluid thing, as its definition is attempted. My grandfather, Daniel Floyd Pate, said the Pates of Patetown came from Wales. The Welsh are the people of the red dragon, ancestors of the Lancasters, kin of Patetown's "royals". You see what I mean. Thoroughgood Pate was associated with the Chevins in the Rappahannock Valley of Virginia, where Thomas Chevin was a royal tax collector. Out of that association Thoroughgood Pate married Sarah, sister of Nathaniel Chevin, Deputy Lord Proprietor of North Carolina. You know that story. What surprised me was that Echevin is old French and Flemish for tax collector. Interestingly, however, the Chevin family has no history in America. Neither have my Donella ancestors. Who were those people? Levantines seems to be the answer. Levantine is another word for descendants of Phoenicians/Philistines. This is deep, involving the metamorphosis of the Tribe of Dan into Vikings and Norsemen--and Templars. They were Phoenicians who became Venetians. The Venetians became English nobles and "tax farmers". It is hard to explain that pro-English Scottish Campbells were once Italian Campobellos (Beautiful Fields)--or that Capets were once Venetian Ca' Pets (House of Pet). I won't press or pursue that last, except to say it explains the long association of the Pates and Lancasters, and old noble surnames of Belfast-Patetown (originally Torhunta). Pates were administrators of confiscated church properties under the Tudors. It was in this capacity (as royal accountants) they were "enobled" (bought titles). They were also drapers, in which capacity they were involved in all aspects of sheep production and cloth manufacture. This activity put them in contact with the experts in textile production, Flemings from the Levant (Greater Palestine, which Islam fears Israel will ulltimately reclaim), which anciently included all the Mid-East "oil patch". One of our Pate lines is paternally descended from Major (Henry?) Isham Pate. Isham I believe to be derived from Hisham, an ancient Middle Eastern (Levantine) surname, represented by the all-powerful Sir Henry Isham in Virginia (not popularly known). Isham Pate married Barbara, daughter of James Cummings. The Cummings were anciently Flemish Levantines, who became pro-English Norman nobility--one of whom became an emperor of the Cherokees! It is a long story, few will learn--or accept (or allow spread of it). The mission of Alexander Cummings, Emperor of the Cherokees, was establishment of a homeland for English and Scottish Jews. That is not a story that will see light soon in the popular press. It ties in, however, with the Primitive Baptist belief in the ultimate re-uniting of the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel with Judah and Benjamin. This is all worked out in much detail in literature by various modern British Israelite sects, referred to by Abelard Reuchlin in THE TRUE AUTHORSHIP OF THE NEW TESTAMENT. Our great grandfather Henry Franklin Pate was a "Messenger" of the Primitive Bapatist Church. So were others of my ancient Pate kin. They were convinced that God still has a message for humanity, imparted to some who are indwelled by His Spirit. The Primitive Baptists identified themselves as the Elect of God, and the True Israel in post-Biblical times. Audrey has letters To and from her grandfather Joseph Garris describing the assault on such beliefs by the "New Light" Free-Will Baptists. But that is too much to go into here. Some who know don't want the world to know the old origins and associations that led to the establishment of Patetown, to supplant the memory of the Tuscarora administrative center Torhunta. That was the culmination of the process that began at the beginning of the millennium that preceded the past one. That process was one of escape from a past so full of terror that it was too terrible to even describe. Some of that terror was in the treatment of our Tuscaroran Indian ancestors of Torhunta/Patetown, of whom John Pate (spelled Peat F. Roy Johnson's History of the Tuscaroras) was a chief (and a punisher of insurrectionists who took the side of the Coree)--and as bad, or worse, terrors in Europe, and elsewhere. John Pate (Peat) was cousin to noble English Blounts. Tom Blount was chief of the pro-English Tuscaroras, who chastised the Tuscororas of Torhunta for their support of their Coree in-laws. You don't have to be very quick to see that there are family stories that do the members no credit. Tradition is that a son of John Pate poked out the eyes of a brother, who I've concluded was on the Coree side of the Tuscarora War. The rest is record and tradition, ignored and/or actively hidden. I've written some about it (and made myself a laughing stock). Time will yet tell the story. Our money-crazed society needs an explanation better than we have. I have shared much of it in one form or another with my Internet "integrity group", or in my copyrighted unpublished manuscripts, called by the professional readers the work of a Cassandra. Others have another education agenda for us. Terror is nothing new. John Barnwell brought it to the Corees. If this strikes you as nonsense, I won't be surprised. My refuge has long been in lunacy. On the other hand, if you check it out, you may be amazed. But hurry. The old records are disappearing fast. ---------------------------------------------------------- As you can see, my search does not get simpler. Ravenous historical moths have not been able to devour certain golden strands in our tapestry of the past. Curiosity about my own family's history has made me aware of some such surviving treasures . One such golden thread is that of the Stoic virtue of Thrasea Paetus. Thrasea Paetus was a native of Patavium (which became Padua (a genealogical Soundex synonym of Pate), now Padova, Italy). Even though much of THE ANNALS OF IMPERIAL ROME by Tacitus was lost, the generalized contrast of the "system" of Paetus with the behavioral norms of the court of Emperor Nero (which was the epitome of the degeneracy of the Julian line of Emperors) is preserved. According to Abelard Reuchlin, in his study THE TRUE AUTHORSHIP OF THE NEW TESTAMENT, Thrasea Paetus is the pen name of a Roman of senatorial class, Arius Calpurnius Piso. Reuchlin further contends that Arius Calpurnius Piso (AKA Thrasea Paetus) is the true name of the renowned Jewish author and historian of the era of Nero, Flavius Josephus. Not satisfied with this assault on classical knowledge, Reuchlin says that Arius Calpurnius Piso (AKA Thrasea Paetus AKA Flavius Josephus) is the true author of some of the Gospels of the THE NEW TESTAMENT, and that members of the Piso family were writers of many other books of THE NEW TESTAMENT canon. THE TRUE AUTHORSHIP OF THE NEW TESTAMENT by Abelard Reuchlin (ISBN 0-930808-02-9) is published by the Abelard Reuchlin Foundation, P.O. Box 5652, Kent, WA 98064. Who is Abelard Reuchlin? He identifies himself as a Jew, and contends that the information imparted in his study is common knowledge in all Jewish families; wherein all children are as carefully schooled in the hoax as Islam's children are schooled in the Koran and the dangers of Dajjal. With access to the Internet, I research this matter, because of the newsworthy timeliness of religious conflict. Please tell me more about Reuchlin and the conflict his thesis foments, if you learn anthing new of any of this. I have circuitously shared this with Chief Faircloth of the Coree Indian tribe, who professes to know nothing of Chief Paget, who mysteriously disappeared from North Carolina Colonial Records just before his scheduled negotiation of peace between the colony and the Corees. It is my opinion that Chief Paget was the leader of the Pates who led the Croatans (Corees) to the area of the present Pembroke, North Carolina, from the Cortuca (now New Bern) area. This is not an idea that Iroquoian (Cherokee and Tuscarora) interests in North Carolina can support. This all ties in with Royall (Reel, Real) family history that can be traced from North Carolina to the Pacific Coast, in association with Lewises and Payettes. No. It's not simple. When I was a boy I roamed much as I pleased, but that was a terrible waste of time and opportunities. It took me most of my life to realize that the world is not much more than a big drain of ourselves and our substance, marketed with glitz and sex appeal. All we get out of life, ultimately, is satisfaction of our curiosity--or not. Whatever my grandchildren do--and where ever they go--I want them to know Pates were there before them, and brought good things for the natives (who had the sense to appreciate it). The Pisos were ancient Patavians (Paduans), who became hereditary Roman governors (propraetors) of pre- and post-Jesus Syria. As such, their vists to the sea (Mediteranean or Gallilean) would have made them travel the road past Krak Magdala, the castle home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus, where they would have found satisfactory accommodations. These are realities that cement together our deliberately broken past. It has been a comfort to me to know that our ancestors were not trash, driven over Earth by vagrant winds. They generally gripped Earth's controls, and safely drove her home from her hurts and disappointments. Our personal values are in our contribution to breaking Humanity free of Earth's gravity (that's a double entendre), as Imus leads us out of the wilderness. Cable TV is grand amusement, but not mightily enlightening or uplifting--until our turns of mind turn sceptically cynical and critical. Mercifully, most of The Past is carefully and permanently erased. Ignorance thus enables most of us to go on unfettered by old grievances. Our ignorance is never perfect, however, so we struggle all our lives with fragmental knowledge. So History, Religion, and our personal value sets, are continually being reinvented out of our cultural dreck. This is brought to my attention by Gary Forsythe's scholarly THE HISTORIAN L. CALPURNIUS PISO FRUGI AND THE ROMAN ANNALISTIC TRADITION, published by University Press of America, 1994 (from Barnes&Noble for $84.50+shipping). This tome takes us back to before the Christian era, to people who worked with a variety of pseudonyms to stay alive while writing The Truth. Convey to your children that they are not destined to find their refuges in ignorance. God is providential. He sends a man to fix the world when we break it. Inclosed with this is a copy of excerpts from the Halbert book on Pates. It give you some appreciation of variants of spelling of our name. It neglects some, however, like Paget, which is key to Lumbee history and the Pates of Robeson County. Our history is suppressed for a variety of reasons. Let me know if any of this makes any sense, and if you can add to it.. The above may be more than you can enjoy at one sitting. Consume it as you would eat an elephant--a little at a time. Happy Chanuka, Righteous Ramadan, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours, Cuz. Al Pate
