Ed Paul 1/19/00
The Paul family of Kirkudbrightshire, Scotland generally used one "L".John Paul's son William came to America and retained the single L. (his other son was John Paul Jones). John Paul Sr.'s brother Hugh came to America and changed his name to the double L after he got here.Although he sometimes was recorded as one L.Many of his descendants, particularly those of Hugh's son George, retained the double L, but it appears that most of the other children's desc. reverted to one L.So we have both forms within the same family.
The Scots did not have Coats of Arms as we know them. But they did have clan crests.
