"Born John Paul in Scotland to the family of a gardener, Jones entered the British maritime service at the age of 12.In two separate incidents in 1770 and 1773, he was accused of causing the death of a crew member... Faced by legal action, he fled to Virgina, where he add "Jones" to his name... (much later) He was appointed an agent to France..spent his last two years in Paris in ill health. In 1905, Jones' alleged remains were brought from France to the American Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, in order to be gloriously enshrined." source: THE ALMANAC OF AMERICAN HISTORY by Arthur M.
