The entire Cyrus family is actually the John Siers b. 1700 living in Fauquier County: two sons: James and John: one branch ended up as Sears another ended up as Cyrus
William is actually a Sayers: he is the son of Robert Sayers of Lancaster Penn.....these chaps ended up as Sawyers...not Sears or Sayers
which is often the case back then:
the original names are most often Sayre, Sayres, Sayers and Siers, Seers...Sears is a pretty late more 1800s spelling
But Robert and William Sayers are no relations to the John Siers lineage at all.......
Nor is Joseph Sceares that you find: he was an indentured servant who arrived in WV around 1743 I think it was.....
The challenge with this region: is that a few settlers trickled in early
but the majority left due to the 1755 Indian Wars......most did not return
but a whole bunch did
So you end up with hanging lineages: a piece here: then a gap there
Example: there is also reference to one Sampson Sayers/Siers and an Isaac Sayers/Sears.........no idea what became of them
The key to this though: is that by tradition: Sayers got this surname from their trade: its a trade name like smith or Tailor
A Sayer is in the cloth business: usually weaving: but sometimes gloves, merchants, wool......
