Years ago "The American Genealogist" magazine suggested that James' mother was Innes. However with the publishing of the Rhode Island records it is clear that Mary Richmond's first child was by Richard Canterbury.
General Court at Newport, June 1658:
Mary Paull the Daughter of John Richmond of Newport Senr. being examined confesseth that she was with chyld by Richard Canterbury before she was married: Whereupon John Richmond and the sayd Mary are bound in a bond four pounds that the said Mary shall make her lawful apearance by her self or her Aturny at the next Genl. Court of Tryalls held at Warwick there to abide the determination for fornication.

General Court of Tryalls at Warrick Nov 3: 1658. Upon a presentment by the Gen. Atur. against Marie Paull for fornication: Her father John Rd Senr. in her behalfe enters her Traverse: pleads Guilty and refers her to the judgment of the Bench: The Court do judge her Guilty of fornication and to be whipt or pay forty sh. according to law. Judgment Granted.
