I recently purchased from a Malvern, PA antiques dealer an ad printed on blotter paper, bearing a drawing of a man dressed in a suit and hat and carrying a cane, printed adjacent to a slogan reading:
"When in need of a
TAILOR
Just think of
TAYLOR"
To the right of this graphic image is stamped the following information:
"CHAS. F. PAUL
Men's Furnishings and Clothing
527 Penn St.
Pearding, Pa."
I found Charles F. Paul in the 1880 Census data for Reading (resided at 409 South Seventh Street), Berks Co., PA; the 1910 Census data for Reading (resided at 454 Douglass Street), Berks Co., PA; and the 1930 Census data for Reading (resided at 457 Douglass Street), Berks Co., PA.He is also listed in the Reading city directories dated 1887-90 (locations 537 Penn and 29 N 10th), with his occupation listed as cutter.
Charles F. Paul was born about 1868 in PA, the son of a shoe maker, Joshua Paul, born about 1833 in PA; and Sarah M. (maiden name unknown), born about 1849 in PA.At the time of the 21 & 22 Apr 1910 enumeration, Charles was widowed and living with three daughters (all born in PA)--Dorothy G., born about 1895; Mary R., born about 1898; and Emily S., born about 1900.His occupation was listed as retail merchant, clothing.At the time of the 7 Apr 1930 enumeration, he was living with his wife (by a second marriage?), Clarissa R. (maiden name unknown), born about 1872 in PA, and his occupation is listed as retail store, gents furnishings).
