I have alot of information on Roger Kilpatrick's family. My ancestors were Asa Ellison who married Elizabeth Kilpatrick in 1782 in Greenbrier Co.Elizabeth was likely not one of Roger's daughters as she was not named in his will [unless, perhaps she died by then and she did die in the 1792-1800 time period]. I'm trying to figure out which of the many Kilpatricks in that area could be her father.
Anyway, Roger Kilpatrick was the son of Charles Kilpatrick who died in 1767 in Augusta Co VA [later this area was Greenbrier VA now WVA] In his will, Charles named: wife Elizabeth, sons Alexander and Roger, daughters Ann Hogshead, and Elizabeth. [I may be leaving out another dau.] Charles left land to Alexander, but money to Roger; however, Roger already owned property according to tithables/land records. They all lived on land near "Moffet's Creek" in or near the Borden Tract in Augusta Co.
Roger left a will in 1797.His wife was Jean unknown. He had sons James and Thomas and daughters Lettice, Mary, Jean.Son Thomas m twice -Jenny Henderson 1793. 4 children;Jane,Anna,Madison,John. Married Jamima Wilson 1806. Moved to Scioto Cty,Ohio.Had several more children there. Nancy,m Joseph Morris. second marriage, moved to Fayette Cty,Ohio c 1807. James b 1787,m Nancy Smith, dau of Bruten Smith, 1806. dau Sarah b 1807 in WV.Went to Fayette Cty, Ohio c 1807-had total of 13 children. Roger's dau. Mary, m a Barton (Bartin or Burton/Borden). Lettice m Hugh Paul. Jean, no info. Roger owned land between Indian and Hans Creek in Red Sulphur Springs area.
Alexander, brother of Roger, was the Deputy Sheriff/Jailor in Augusta 1780 and the Sheriff was George Moffet.George Moffet rose to the rank of Colonel during the Rev. War.Alexander served, probably, although there was another Alexander also in the county, so hard to tell if both served.Alexander's wife was Mary unknown. They sold land to George Moffett in 1780, but also kept most of their land.Alexander moved to Anderson Co TN sometime after 1790.George Moffet's daughter Martha was married to Robert Kirkpatrick - sometimes referred to as Robert Kirk, not sure how he was related.George Moffett's wife was Sarah Margaret McDowell.Asa Ellison had a son Asa Jr. who named his son Asa McDowell Ellison - not sure where the McDowell name came from, but probably through the Kilpatrick side.
There were several Kilpatrick/Kirkpatrick families in the immediate area, probably all related, but I am just beginning to sort out through land records, wills etc. They use the names Kilpatrick/Kirkpatrick/Kirk/and Patrick interchangeably.
There are at least 4 or 5 main heads of families starting around 1700-1730 time period with these surnames:
1. Charles Kilpatrick aforementioned, with b. abt 1700, d. 1767, wife Elizabeth, sons Alexander & Roger both b. abt 1730-40, dau Ann m. James Hogshead, dau. Elizabeth. Roger's family shown above.Alexander had a son Charles who moved with him to TN, married there, then moved to MO and IL & had a son named Charles Alexander Kirkpatrick.
2. Thomas Kilpatrick I b. abt 1710 d. 1780's had a wife Elizabeth who may have been a Peerie as John Peerie left property to Thomas Kilpatrick in his will in 1762, along with leaving property to his own Peerie brothers.Thomas & Elizabeth had a son John Kilpatrick and other sons, as John is referred to in some documenst as his eldest son.Thomas bought property in the Beverly Manor in 1740's.John b. abt 1740, wife Martha, children Thomas II, James, George, Anny, Jane, Margaret, Mary "Polly", and Nancy. John left will 1811 Rockbridge Co VA. His dau Anny Kirkpatrick left will 1816 and refers to her brothers James and Thomas "Kirkpatrick" and George "Kirk" - all same document. Thomas I's property in Beverly Manor was on the border of that area with the Borden Tract. The property descriptions indicate the land was very close to the land of the Charles Kilpatrick, father of Roger and Alexander. It is possible that Charles and Thomas were brothers or close cousins. Note: John's wife Martha may have been a Young as John was chosen as guardian by Wm. and Hugh Young when their father died and was appt guardian of their younger brother Robt. Young. The Young property was adjoinging Thomas/John Kilpatrick's property.
3.There was yet another Charles Kirkpatrick who died and left will naming his sons Charles Jr. and John - this John married a Margaret [believed to be d/o Michael Dickey]. His land descriptions are different than those of the Charles father of Roger/Alexander.
4.Robert Kirkpatrick I, often Robt. Patrick, but sometimes Kirk, also in Augusta Co in same time frame.Had a son John who had a son Robert II and I believe it is this Robt II who married Martha Moffett, but that Robt could be the son of James Kirk, below -not sure yet.
5. James Kirk's d. 1783 will--named children Alexander, John, Martha, Robert, James, and George, wife Jean. William Moffet [not George] and John Kirk were appointed guardians of James and George Kirk, orphans of James Kirk.In 1747 Robert Bratton and James Kirk testified at Augusta County Court that they had been robbed of an "orange colored sitting gown, a pale China gown, a stripped blue and white cotton gown, a petticoat, a light colored broadcloth coat, two beaver hats, a black velvet cap, a blue jacket of home-made cloth, a hat of Bermuda plat with red ribbon band. There was a "James Kerke" in Orange Co VA records (appt. constable) as early as 1734 - this became Augusta Co.However, there was an Elizabeth Kirk settling the estate of her husband James in late 1730's early 40's, so the first one may have died and this next MAY have been his son.
