PAUL family of Bovedy, Kilrea Parish, COUNTY DERRY early 1800s
Perhaps someone can help me find more info about this Irish PAUL family? Especially the parents or siblings of William PAUL.
William PAUL was born about 1831 in Kilrea Parish, County Derry, Ireland, according to both a death entry and N.Z Archive transcripts of his enrolment into the Otago Contingent of Military Settlers, although his death certificate gives his birthplace as Bovedy in County Derry.
William PAUL was the son of John PAUL, who was a farmer, and Martha PAUL, maiden name unknown, but who may have been of French lineage.
William himself served two years with the Royal Irish Constabulary Feb 1854 to Dec 1855. In Oct 1855 he married Isabella GRACEY and in 1856 the couple emigrated to Australia aboard the ship "Arthur the Great".
In Australia William served with the Victorian Police at Portland from June 1856 till Nov 1862. During this period the couple had five children: Martha Jane PAUL, was born 19th Sept. 1856 at Portland. (13315)
The next four children were all baptised in the Portland Presbyterian Church:
William John PAUL, born 6th Nov. 1857. (3191)
Agnus Margaret PAUL, born 6th May 1859. (14259)
Isabella PAUL, born 22nd July 1861, (15137), Hurd Street, Portland.
Grisetta PAUL, born 5th Feb. 1863, (4135), Hurd Street, Portland.
Some time in 1863, William, with his wife and five small children, emigrated to Dunedin, New Zealand, where William seems to have served briefly with the Otago Police force before enlisting with the Otago Contingent of Military Settlers in August 1863.The Otago Contingent was one of the militia forces being formed in Australia and the South Island to respond to threat of Maori hostilities. Members of the militia were offered a grant of confiscated Maori land upon fulfilment of certain obligations. They were to serve until discharged, take up the land allotted to them, erect stockades in townships, remain on their land for three years, and undergo certain military training.
Initially based at New Plymouth, William PAUL transferred to the “Rangers” for Patea 21 Mar 1865 ( shortly after the birth of daughter Mary PAUL, chr. 9 Mar 1865.)
William PAUL left the Rangers on 6 Jan 1866. For his services he was issued with Crown Grants comprising town allotments: lot 16 sec 15 Hurangi, and lot 13 sec 109 Manutahi; plus farmland: lot 48 sec 32 Manutahi.
Born at Mataitawa and Manutahi in Taranaki New Zealand, were another five children:Matilda; David; Robert; Thomas; and Nancy.
William PAUL died 8 Dec 1892 aboard ss. “Mararoa” at Port Chalmers, Otago, and is buried at New Cemetary, Port Chalmers.
