Rev. Samuel Rutherford Houston, D.D.compiled during the years 1878-82;
assisted by papers of his father, Rev. Samuel Houston, Rockbridge Co. Va.
Beginning Chapter 1, page 7 the following:
John Houston came from Ireland with his family, bringing his mother, wife,
and all children...John Houston's mother, Mrs. John Houston, the mother of us
all, as she is the first line of descent known to us of the Houston family who
came to America from the north of Ireland, (about 1735), was a widow.She
lived to an advanced age, 97 years...She was buried in Rockbridge Co., Va. in a
cemetery not far from the present New Providence Church, in the direction of
Walker's Creek....

DUNDEE, co. Donegal, Ireland, separated from St. Johnstown by a small stream.John Houston was from Dundee, the Cowans from nearby St. Johnstown.
The will was probated in 1732, the widow and son John Houston soon leaving
for America.The son is in the will John Houston of Drumnabratty (Raphoe parish, co. Donegal, Ireland.)
Alderman Cowan, merchant of Derry is listed as an executor.His daughter
Mary is there, too.Rember the names Davis and Gardner and fast forward to Rockbridge co, Virginia, America.

"The widow Houston made her home with her older son, John.After residing in
Pennsylvania for about a decade, they all took the long, hard trail to "the
back parts of Virginia."....The land of John Houston cornered on the lands of
James Eikins, Richard Consard, and Samuel Dunlap.The witnesses to the
transaction were Robert Davis, James Caldwell and George Gardner.Irish John
Houston's sister was Elizabeth Gardiner Houston and Benjamin Davis (Davies)
merchant of Derry appears in the will.
