Leann,
Found this on the web somewhere some time ago while researching my family history (my wife's surname is Paul)
Scotland, with it’s rugged terrain and rich ancestry was the beginning of the ancient family tree of the Paul family. The earliest forms of hereditary surnames in Scottish were the patronymic surnames, which were derived from the father’s given name, and metronymic surnames, which are derived from the mother’s given name. Scottish patronymic names emerged as early as the mid 9th century. The patronyms were derived from a variety of given names that were of many different origins. The surname Paul is derived from the ancient Latin personal name Paulus, meaning small. It has always been common in Christendom due to the importance and enduring popularity of St Paul.
Spelling variations include: Paul, Paule, Paull, Paulls and others.
First found in Gloucestershire where they were seated from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D.
