"The Andalusia Daily Star" 11 APR 1924 p3: "Mrs. Eliza Jane Franklin, of Covington's oldests citizens, 92 years of aged died at her home near Loango, March 31. Mrs. Franklin was born August 25, 1832, near Red Level. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Williams. In 1853 at the age of 20 years she was married to William H. Franklin; came with him to his homestead near Loango and there she spent her remaining years living at the same place for 72 years. It was interesting to hear her relate the experiences of her young married life telling of her experience during the Civil War. To this happy union, eight children were born: seven girls and one boy. Her husband passed away 29 years ago, also six of her children preceded her to the grave. Mrs. Franklin was the grandmother of 35 children; the great grandmother of 15 children. She was a faithful member of the Baptist church. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon by Rev. George H. Shears in Fair Mount cemetery. The deceased is survived by two children. Mrs. Eliza Jane Hart of River Falls, and Mr. George Willis Franklin of Red Level, Route A." She was buried in 1924 in Fairmount Baptist Church Cemetery, Red Level, Covington County, Alabama.
Curt Franklin remembers his great-grandma Eliza. He says she was a large woman and he recalls sitting in her lap as a youngster.
Another story about Eliza talks about her time during the Civil War. Knowing that Union soldiers were in the area, Eliza took what provisions and farm animals she had and hid time in a ditch or ravine at the woods out back from the home. By this means she managed to save what little they had from the soldiers and keep it for her family. William H. Franklin and Elizabeth Jane "Eliza" Williams had the following children:

Burial followed in the church cemetery. Foreman Funeral Home directing; "The Covington News" 27 JAN 1944, front page-WHO WAS THIS MAN? In James Stewart's latest book, Taps for Private Tussia, we are given a story based upon the fact that they used the wrong corpse when they thought they were burying Clem Tussie. Following is a story of a man who gave his name as James Wilson FRANKLIN, and who was identified by his brother who lives in Montgomery as the true James Wilson FRANKLIN, and who died at the welfare home here in Andalusia and who was buried at Fairmount Church, Red Level, Monday, and, following the funeral who should turn up in Andalusia but the real James Wilson FRANKLIN. Here is the story related by the Foreman Funeral Home's Manager: Several weeks ago a man came to Andalusia and gave his name as Mr. GREEN. He was a sewing machine mechanic (he claimed), he was taken ill at Keys Boarding House and Mrs. Dell O'NEAL HART was called. She sent him to a local hospital were he stayed for several weeks. Mrs. HART later moved him to the Welfare Home on Dunson Street, where he was visited by a number of people and some of them identified him as James Wilson FRANKLIN and he admitted that was his name. Mrs. HART spent a large sum of money trying to find his people, but all in vain. He died Sun. morning at 1 o'clock. FRANKLIN's only brother lived in Montgomery, and he came Sunday and identified the man as his brother. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Fairmount Church in Red Level. Late Monday afternoon James Wilson FRANKLIN showed up in Andalusia. He was asked if he was not dead and buried Monday afternoon and he said H*** No. So Mrs. HART is busy trying to find out who was buried Monday at Fairmount. Foreman Funeral Home directing."

Franklin c.1880 which hung on the wall in the living room of his own home in River Falls, Alabama, now in possession of descendant Lisa R. Franklin.
My great grandfather William Jefferson Franklin was called Bill by most folks. In the early 1900's Bill bought himself a car. His niece Sarah Franklin Mock tells me he was one of the first in the area to own a car and she related the following event to which she was an eyewitness! Not having had his new automobile long, Bill was not a very skilled driver. One Sunday morning he was driving home from church with several passengers, of whom Sarah was one, when he came upon the elderly Mrs. King and her granddaughters walking along the road. Mrs. King was injured in the incident in which Sarah says she'll never forget the felling of the car just "a'bumping over" the poor woman! A document was retried that verifies her story. It reads, "Received of W. J. Franklin the sum of $40.00 forty dollars it being in full of all claims or demands of expenses and doctor's bills in the case of an accident that occured on Sunday the 25th day of April 1920 at or near New Home Church. Said accident done by the said W.J. Franklin with a Ford car by running over Mrs. E. L. King. It is agreed and understood by all parties concerned that this 40 dollars is a full and complete settlement in said case." Signed by the mark of Mrs. E.L. King and witnessed by R.A. Franklin (brother of W.J.), Justice of the Peace on May 7, 1920.
Bill was obviously a very religious man, as were most folks of his time and Sarah tells me he gave money to have a Church of Christ built in Andalusia across the road from his first home.
William Jefferson (Bill) Franklin and Lora B. Feaster were married on 3 MAY 1903 in River Falls, Covington County, Alabama.8,9 Lora B. She was buried on 8 AUG 1975 in Magnolia Cemetery, Andalusia, Covington County, Alabama. Will of Lora B. Franklin Wilder; Covington Co, AL. Per 1973 probate court record regarding guardianship of Lora B. [Feaster Franklin] Wilder, Mrs. Wilder has a dower right in the following lands described: The SW1/4 of the NE 1/4 of S21 T4 R15E, less a strip in the NW corner 20 yards wide and running East 240 yards. Also about 2 acres lying near the SE corner of the NW 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of S 21 T4 R15E and running North 35 yards to a little bottom place and thence NE to a branch and thence SW along said branch to the land line, and thence West along said land line to starting point and containing about 2 acres, or a total of about 41 acres, more or less."
Sarah Franklin Mock remembers clearly her Uncle Bill and Aunt Lora. At age 15 Lora married Bill Franklin, who was 32 years her senior. Sarah recall a story about that time. In order to talk Bill into marrying her daughter, Lora's mother, Lissy Feaster, covered Lora's private parts with a turkey's feathers so she could lift the girl's petticoats that Bill might see what nice legs her daughter had!
Curt Franklin remembers that his father would go and pick up my great grandmother Lora every voting day and let her ride with him to the polling place. He did this because he knew she would vote like he wanted her to! William Jefferson (Bill) Franklin and Lora B. Feaster had the following children:

some of the smoldering leaves up her petticoats causing them to catch
fire. Her mother Laura badly burnt her own arms putting out the
child's flaming dresses. Bonzeal died about 2 weeks later as a result
of severe burns. In an interview with Ms. Sarah L. Franklin Mock in
1990, Sarah said the little girl's skin on her abdomen was so thin
after the burns that you could see her intestines through the skin. She was buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Andalusia, Covington County, Alabama.
