You are stumbling across the same unreliable data that I did so let me stop you before you make the same mistakes I made.
William Taylor b: c1742 married Ruth Stapleton.
There is NO Ruthy Janet Paul.
The book "A History of Rockbridge County, Virginia" by Oren F. Morton, published in 1920, which everybody obtains their data from, is FLAT OUT WRONG.
Oren states William Taylor married Janet Paul and then researchers find that William Taylor names his wife, Ruthy, in his will so they say "her name must have been Ruthy Janet Paul" they try "to make it fit".
Capt. Audley Paul was named the son of Hugh Paul, once again by Oren Morton and once again another mistake. From the book "A History of Rockbridge County, Virginia" by Oren F. Morton, published in 1920:
PAUL-- "Captain Audley Paul was a son of Hugh Paul......" this should be John Paul and Jane Lynn
Capt. Audley Paul did not have a daughter Janet or Ruth.
William's brother James married Ann Paul, d/o Capt. Audley Paul and Jane Matthews. And William's brother Cawfield married Rebecca Paul, d/o of Capt. Audley and Jane (Matthews) Paul.
Two Taylor Brothers did marry two Paul sisters but one of them was not William and there was never a Ruthy Janet Paul.
I have spent months sorting out the Taylor/Paul/Matthews families.Copied all of the wills and read all of the books. The error originates from Oren Morton's book and other researchers stumble across the book and think, just because it is in print, it must be Gospel.....PRINT HAS POWER.
Oren Morton's book has glaring errors.Errors that I have spent hours untangling.
