They are living next door to a family named Fendel, also from Russia
Worked with water mains and caulked giant pipes. There was a cave in and he got impaled by a pipe.
The following is from a Greeley, CO Newspaper October 12 1940:
Geo. HERMAN Badly Hurt on Pipeline
George Herman, about 50, living at 1331 Third Avenue, Greeley, was seriously injured about 8:30 am Saturday when a bank caved on the Greeley Pipeline, five miles east ofFort Collins.
Herman was taken to the Fort Collins hospital where it was found he had sustained a fractured pelvis and possible internal injuries. His attending physician said he has a good chance of recovery, baring complications from internal injuries which had not yet shown up at noon.
Herman was employed by the Greeley City Water Department with a crew of about 50 men who are uncovering a section of the Greeley line to cover it with asphalt as protection against alkali.
Soil is removed from around the pipe and the covering is done in the trench.Shortly after starting on the job Saturday morning Herman was pinned against the pipe by a caving of the bank.Fellow workmen worked feverishly to extricate him and he was gotten to the hospital shortly after 9:00 am.His hips were crushed against the pipe by the weight of the dirt, but he was not covered much above the waist.Herman was conscious and directed the excavating operations.
When first taken to the hospital Herman was suffering from shock and his recovery was deemed doubtful.Later, he rallied and hopes were extended for his recovery.
Superintendant, Milt Seaman who arrived at the scene of the work shortly after the cave-in said the accident occurred in the trench dug Friday. It was between five and six feet deep.Herman was cleaning off the pipe preparatory to applying asphalt.
Herman has been a regular employee of the water works department for many years. He is an expert pipe layer.
