I believe Penelope PAUL was Penelope GOULDING, the daughter of Roger GOULDING. The fact that she was identified as a widow in 1710 supports two inferences from other records.
Various records show her as married to either John PAUL or William PAUL. (e.g., the Westcott History and Geneaology lists her as marred John Paul, b. July 10, 1660, son of William PAUL of Taunton, MA). It seems she was married to both, John first, then to the younger William PAUL of Newport. Surviving records unearthed by a cousin, Barb Baxter, shows that this William PAUL (a mariner) and Penelepe GOULDING were the parents of the William PAUL who married Mary Haywood at Newport in 1736. Joshua could have been a son of John PAUL and Penelope. It's rather straining coincidence that Penelope GOULDING would happen to marry a second PAUL not related to the first, and that a Joshua PAUL would show up randomly in Newport with no relation to William.
Second, I suspect Penelope GOULDING's second husband William was a son or grandson of the first William PAUL of Taunton. The Ancestral File records are extremely muddled. My suspicion is that there were (at least) two William PAULs of similar ages from Taunton. One was born in 1691 and married a Mary WHITMARSH from Weymouth in 1718. The other was probably a brother, cousin, or nephew of the John PAUL who first married Penelope GOULDING. The Mormon Ancestral file lists a John PAUL b. 10 July 1660 as a son of the original William PAUL, but places his death 23 Mar 1718.
Some of the records have to be wrong for this to work, but it's clear that some of the records are wrong. I'm far from sure I'm right, but it's an educated guess.
