From the Edward Paul's books on the Paul family I have found the following on the Paul's from Newport.
"Moreover, persons bearing the surname, Paul, lived in Newport in ancient times.Among them was Penlope Paul, widow who conveyed the 22nd lot in Dighton bounded by the lands of Joshua Tisdale and the heirs of Thomas Wood, the same having been a dower from her brother, Thomas Gooding, unto George Gooding for one hundred pounds, October 7, 1710;Joshua Paul, who married Sarah Sanford at Newport, according to the records there, March 21,1736; William Paul, who married Mary Haywood at Newport, July 25, 1736, and Joshua Paul who married Judith Pike at Newport, November 4, 1750. Besides these there is one William Paul, whose name frequently appears in tghe records of Trionity Church of Newport between the years
1709 and 1731, and one Thomas Paul of Newport, who bound himself with Joseph Atkinson, in December,
1784, unto McClouster Denny of Virginia..."
That these Paul's have never been connected to the the other Paul's of New England is possibly on the account of Taunton and Newport's records having been lost to fires. That Penelope owned lands in Dighton suggests to me that she was married into William's family, but since the common names of that era were used so often it is difficult to ascertain, where a particular William, Joshua or even Ebenenezer Paul might fit in. Just keep digging.
