Dear fellow John Paul Jones researchers,
I have only two pieces of documentation to share on John Paul Jones.
First, it has been told to me that he never had children. He supposedly followed his brother William Paul to America.

From a paper written by Roland M. Zeender, of Gaithersburg, MD.
It reads that "John Paul Jones, was a designer, a builder, a strategist, an administrator, a teacher, a financier and a fighter. But, above all, he was a loyal American! He was born to Scottish born parents at "Arbigland", a country estate near Kirkcudbright, Scotland, on July 6, 1747, a young John Paul was mentally alert and highly imaginative.Kirkcudbright was small but being on the saltwalter coast, the city was not cuff off from the world. Not only did he constantly hear tales of high adventure from the men of the sea, but his older brother, William Paul, sent intriguing reports of having done "fairly well" in the new land of America.
At the age of 12, John Paul signed on the merchant vessel Friendship. His activities as a sailor can only be sketchily traced. He made a number of voyages to the colonies in the New World, visited his brother, and also served on a British warship. On his layovers in America, he made good use of his time, often traveling in and throughout Virginia and North Carolina. In the latter, he met and made what turned out to be worthy Masonic associates. He was raised in St. Bernards Lodge # 122 (North) St. Cuthbert #41 of Kirkcudbright, Scotland.November 2?, 1770 when he was 23 years old.It appears that he adopted the name Jones after falling seriously during a trip through North Carolina. There a friend by the name of Willie Jones, took him in and nursed him back to health. As a sign of respect, it is said that John Paul adopted the additional appellation Jones."

Reads as follows:
"The church yard of St. George's Church was established at a very early date.In 1722 the General Assembly passed an act authorizing the vestry to reduce the size thereof. This small "God's Acre" was used before the establishement in 1727 of the town of Fredericksburg. Some of th emost noted men and women of the Colonial period sleep here.Beneath the stone steps of the church itself, for the present steps had not then been built,Colonel Fielding Lewis and his three infant grandchildren.Colonel Lewis, who married General Washington's only sister, Betty Washington, lived nearby at Kenmore. He manufactured many of the guns used in the Revolution for which, by the way, he was never paid.THE SCOT, WILLIAM PAUL, BROTHER OF COMMODORE JOHN PAUL JONES, FATHER OF THE AMERICAN NAVY AND A MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY OF THE CINCINNATI, LIES IN THE GRAVEYARD.WILLIAM PAUL, A NATIVE OF KIRKUDBRIGHT, CAME TO LIVE IN FREDERICKSBURG IN 1760, THE YEAR OF GEORGE HUMES' DEATH.WILLIAM PAUL, DIED IN 1772 AND HIS BROTHER, JOHN PAUL (WHO LATER ADDED THE SURNAME JONES IN RECOGNITION OF A FRIEND), CAME TO FREDERICKSBURG, VIRGINIA TO ADMINISTER TO WILLIAM'S ESTATE.HE LIVED THERE FOR TWO YEARS LEAVING TO ACCEPT A COMMISSION IN THE CONTINENTAL NAVY.
Does anyone have the name of William Paul's wife and who their children were?
If you do please post it here or email me directly at [email protected]
Any help will be most sincerely appreciated!
Respectfully yours,
Suzy Dixon Bennett
